English Composition (Expo Comp)
This competency-based course is designed to develop reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing, and listening and speaking skills. Students review and enrich their understanding of fundamentals of composition: prewriting, outlining, research tools, thesis statement, essay form, writing rubric, proofreading, editing, and revising. Students read and interpret an array of fiction and nonfiction: critical, reflective, and technical essays, the novel, drama, poetry, and the short story. Effective composition skills are fostered through the analysis of exemplary writing and the development of a writing portfolio. The writing portfolio includes a persuasive essay, a narrative, an essay of comparison, a process essay, literary analyses of poetry and the novel, creative writing, an historical investigation report, and a resume.
