This competency-based course examines major factors that have contributed to the shaping of the modern world, including the disparity of ideologies and beliefs, power struggles, and geopolitical differences that have resulted in national and global competition. The course begins with a consideration of the expansion of Western influence, industrialization focusing on England, and the effects of imperialism (using India as an example). The focus on this course is on events of the 20th century, with an emphasis on the interdependence of peoples and cultures of the world and the need for international cooperation and peace. This course seeks to foster and develop the skills of written expression, interpretation of graphic materials (especially the use and interpretation of maps), and critical thinking.
